Milton Keynes awarded City status

On 20 May 2022 Milton Keynes was awarded City status by HM Queen Elizabeth II as part of her Platinum Jubilee celebrations. The inscription marking Milton Keynes’ City Status has been added to the pillar celebrating the designation of Milton Keynes as a new town on 23 January 1967.

Having unsuccessfully applied for City status in 2000, 2002 for the Golden Jubilee and in 2012 for the Diamond Jubilee, at its fourth attempt Milton Keynes was one of eight places in the UK to gain City status to mark HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022. In announcing the civic honour, the Cabinet Office described Milton Keynes as the “pinnacle of the national post-war planning movement, rebuilding the nation and accommodating its growing population”.
